1.2 Statement of the Problem

A longstanding body of knowledge exists on the diffusion of innovations amongst public organizations. However, in public management circles little evidence is presented on the hypothesis that innovation has a positive impact on organizational performance.  Consequently, questions of central importance remain unresolved: Are particular types of innovation associated with higher levels of performance? Do different types of innovation have different impacts on organizational performance? Do higher levels of performance returns only accrue to first movers or are they more widely available to subsequent adopters? Does the possession of particular organizational characteristics associated with innovation have a positive impact on performance? Is the relationship between innovation and performance a direct one or is it moderated by other internal or external variables? While innovation is one of the most widely written about subject in the management sciences only a small number of all the articles examine innovation and organisational performance to the best of the researcher’s knowledge. It is in this light the researcher wishes to investigate innovation and organization performance with particular emphasis on SME’s in Port Harcourt.

1.3 Objectives of study

The purpose of this study is to investigate “innovation and organizational performance of SME’s in Port Harcourt. Its specific objectives are;

a.   To examine technology and its facilitation of efficiency and effectiveness of small and medium scale enterprise in Port Harcourt.

b.  To determine the extent to which electronic commerce can increase organizational profitability.

c.   To determine the impact of innovation on organizational performance.

d.  To determine if there exist a relationship between information, communication technology and Competiveness of SME’s in Port Harcourt.

e.   To evaluate the relationship between electronic commerce and better working environment.
