1.2     STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

          Maintenance of highway means many things to different people, but there is general agreement that it may include elements of rehabilitation, renovation and restoration, necessary to perpetuate a modern, safe and efficient national highway system. It is a programme to preserve, repair and restore a system of roadway with its elements to its designated or accepted configuration.

1.       Every pavement constructed needs routine day to day maintenance to check minor pavement distress, such as pot holes, cracks, a the pavement ages. Timing of maintenance action is important since it must be carried out at the time of maximum return, otherwise the maintenance need will be higher if the pavement is allowed to further deteriorate.

2.       In Nigeria, hot mix asphalt has been the only method used for maintenance. And this involve high sum of money in terms of preparation of moving of equipment materials, and cost of labours.

3.       Because of the intense pressure to make optimum use of the limited resources, likely to be made available for highway maintenance, a better management of technique should be employed.

4.       This is why the use of cold patch method is been looked into, because other part of world have adopted are of cold patch. 

1.3     AIM AND OBJECTIVES

The aim of this project is to assess the suitability of the newly introduced Cold Patch method in highway pavement maintenance.

To achieve the above aim, the following specific objectives shall be pursued:

(i)      To carry out relevant experiments to determine the engineering properties of the cold patch mixtures and the conventional hot mix asphalt concrete.

(ii)     To compare relevant characteristics of cold patch with those of conventional hot-mix asphalt concrete mix in patching.

(iii)    To determine the adequacies of the cold patch mixture and ascertain if it can withstand severe wheel load and weather exposures when used in pavement maintenance.
