ABSTRACT

This study sought to investigate security challenges and students’ enrollments in secondary schools in the South East zone of Rivers State. Five research questions and five null hypotheses that were tested at 0.05 level of significance guided the study. The study was carried out inthe South East zone of Rivers State. The design of the study was descriptive survey design. The population of the study comprised 43 principals and 775 teachers of senior secondary. This number comprised principals and teachers from 35 public senior secondary schools in Rivers South East Senatorial Zone. The sample for the study was 43 principals and 388 teachers. The instrument used for the study was a questionnaire titled examine “Security Challenges and Students’ Enrollments in Secondary Schools in the South East Zone of Rivers State Questionnaire” which was developed by the researcher based on literature reviewed. Test-retest was carried out to determine reliability of the instrument. Copies of the questionnaire were administered to 5 principals 10 teachers in Bayelsa State which is outside the study sample twice and data collected was used to determine the reliability coefficient of the instrument through Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient( PPMC) which yielded reliability coefficient of 0.87. A total of 43 copies and 388 copies of instrument were administered to principals and teachers respectively. The research questions were answered using mean and standard deviation. Z-test was used to test the null hypotheses. Some of the major findings from the analysis were: the impact of security challenges, lack of security devices, need for effective security management can impede the number of students’ enrolled in secondary schools in the Rivers State South East Senatorial zone amongst others. Moreover, it was also found that strategies such as adopting crime prevention environmental design, having security communication device (two-way-radio), establishing patrol programme etc can be adopted to reduce security challenges in the school environment. Based on the findings, the following recommendations were made amongst others;  that since security is paramount for effective enrollment of students, the management of need to adopt threat prevention strategies to keep the environment safe.
